Introduction
This
Webquest was made to help you learn about sports around the
world. What is your favorite sport? The world's
favorite? Where do they play it. You and your team will
work together to research one sport, where it is played, who plays it,
what are the places it is played like, and how the environment can
affect how well people play, and people playing the sport can affect
the environment. Remember to use the five themes of
Geography. At the end, you will get to share what you have
learned with your class, and we will go play your sport together!
The
Task
You will each be assigned to a group that will focus on the assigned sport:
- You are a group of specialized researchers putting together an international sports exhibit for a very prestigious museum
- Each of you will have a area of specialization.
- Cartographer
- Anthropologist
- Sportsologist
- Historian
- Biographer
- Each of you will play an important role in the success of this project.
- If you are not sure about the job of a Cartographer, look it up. Do some research.
- One of you will be responsible for gathering maps, creating maps and graphs to demonstrate what you have learned
- The Five themes of Geography;
- Location
- Place
- Region
- Movement
- Human-environment Interaction
- A written summary will be necessary to complete each area.
- Presentation that will cover each of the five themes of Geography.
Your
group will be responsible for sharing with the class what your team has
found. How will you do this? In a 10-15 minute presentation
with maps, graphs, summary tables and any other visual aids necessary
to show your mastery of each area of Geography.
The
Process
- Review the Five Themes of Geography.
- Then you will be assigned a sport and a group of 3 or 4 "specialists"
- Choose from the following specialized roles.
- Biographer
- Will be responsible for finding information about some of players who have had the greatest impact on the sport.
- Locate a visual aids; photos of players.
- Write an expanded paragraph about why they are important to the sport. What influence did they have on the sport?
- Identify themes you will relate to your area of specialization.
- Cartographer
- Will create
maps, tables and charts to show information. use class globes and maps
to find latitude and longitudes of countries where the sport is popular.
- Write an expanded
paragraph discussing where your sport is popular. Here are some
countries to consider; Spain, England, United States, India and
Brazil. You should find additional countries.
- Locate each country using absolute (latitude and longitude) and relative location.
- Cultural Anthropologist
- Write expanded paragraphs** that includes specified information
- Place: How the sport is affected by climate.
- Identify nicknames or club names. Why have these nicknames come about?
- How does the sport affect the local community?
- Collect artifacts from different countries. What cultural traits are distinguishable?
- Historian - "Sportsologist"
- Write an expanded paragraph that includes specified information
- Formation of the sport. Give as many details available.
- Movement of the sport.
- Visuals of the past critical championships and present day photos.
- What are some of the different rules observed in different countries? Are there any?

Evaluation
You
will be graded both on your ability to work in a small group
effectively and your Individual analysis and synthesis to develop
conclusions regarding geographic themes. Your grade will consist of a
group and an individual component.

Conclusion
This lesson
will have provided valuable learning experiences. Students will
learn not only about the five themes of geography, in the context of a
topic of great interest to them (sports), additionally students
will learn how to work in a group to share their ideas with the class.
